Rhinos and Friends in Serowe
We began our week-long excursion with 2 nights at Khama Rhino Sanctuary in Serowe, Botswana. Khama Rhino Sanctuary was established in 1992 to preserve rhinos in Botswana. Rhinos are still heavily poached in Southern Africa, but with protection, Khama Rhino now has expanded and over 50 rhinos are protected within its boundaries. We also learned Khama Rhino is owned and operated by the 3 nearby villages, as a way to show local students animals of Botswana and create local jobs. Our guides, Sego and Alfred drove around the 4,300 hector park, where we saw white rhinos, blue wildebeest, springbok, and more! Besides animals, we watched a beautiful but cold sunset and enjoyed bonfires.
On Saturday afternoon, we had a site visit to SOS Children’s Village in Serowe. SOS has 3 locations in Botswana, where children without parents stay together and live in family groups with house mothers. Our students joined forces with the young kids to re-paint their play set and pick up litter with the older high school aged kids. We enjoyed hanging out, playing games such as musical chairs and dancing.
