¿Quieres ser torer@?
This was the question posed to students before we began the tour at Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas. Do you want to be a bullfighter?
Students got to take a tour of the arena and learn about the different types of bulls, the arena itself and the detailed process of a bullfight. It was important to note to students that the object is to not let the bull suffer. A successful bullfight is one where the bull is killed in a way that causes the least amount of suffering for the bull. The crowd approves or disapproves of the bullfight based on the suffering of the bull and the risky moves of the torero.
Some students participated in a virtual game simulation of playing the role of the torero in the arena.
At the end of the tour, there were different opinions shared after learning the significance of this part of Spanish culture in society. No matter the student's opinion, all learned new things about this well known tradition. Some students are planning on returning to watch a bullfight this Thursday! ¡Ole!
