Leadership & Service in Youth Development

On Tuesday, we began our day in El Centenario, the original and oldest zoo in Mérida. Our students accompanied the AMANC patients and their parents throughout the zoo to see the animals.  As an older zoo, the ambiance is very unique and the smaller space makes for a more intimate setting for the children. We finished the zoo visit with a train ride around the park.
Continuing from the old, we passed to the new as we were able to tour the AMANC construction for their new facility. Hoping to inaugurate the center in October, it will have triple the space of the former center. Some of the upgrades include 2 post-operative care rooms for patients to be able to recuperate as well as a garden for the parents to be able to spend time together and rejuvenate. Of course, there will be a playground area, a toy room, and space for the children to also be active. Keeping in mind the mission of AMANC to support with dignity and humanity, the center will include a chapel as well.
The day’s adventures certainly helped to show us that both old and new have a lot to offer us, and we are grateful for both experiences.
