Yesterday, June 11th, was the first day of classes. In class, students discussed the meaning of stereotypes and the types of stereotypes that exist about Spanish people and their culture. One such stereotype about the Spanish people is that they are lazy because some Spaniards choose to take a break between 2 and 5 PM. It is common for businesses to close during that time, but Spaniards don’t all go home to take a siesta (nap). Furthermore, this does not mean that Spaniards work fewer hours during the week compared to other countries. Those who can and choose to leave their workplace during that time must return to work and usually stay there until their boss leaves. Spaniards tend to stop working really late, which is why dinner time is typically between 8:30 PM and 10:30 PM.

Another cultural aspect of the Spanish people is that they are very social and enjoy being outdoors. They enjoy being outdoors so much that it is uncommon to invite or be invited to one’s home. If Spaniards want to meet, they will meet and gather at a restaurant or a bar, but rarely ever in their homes. After class, we went to eat at a restaurant called Sentos. Where like the locals we ordered tapas. Tapas as small rations of food ordered for the group to share. We had calamari, lollipops, chicken wrapped in bacon and topped with jelly, Angus steak, and house potatoes.

Eating tapas can be deceptive because you think you might not eat enough, but we left Sentos with full bellies. In an effort to aid digestion, we decided it was time for a walk in central Alicante. To get there we took a quick 30-minute ride on the Tram. Little did we know, our walk would pose to be more challenging, as we ended up hiking to the Santa Barbara Castle. The castle is located on a mountain in Alicante that overlooks the Mediterranean Sea. It seemed that our simple walk had become a long arduous hike, but it was well worth it. There were some breathtaking views of the city and the sea. On our hike, we learned some historical facts and legends. We also learned that at one point this castle was used as a prison. The prisoner’s bathrooms included a beautiful view of the sea, but for many, using the bathroom on a mountain and with your feet off the ledge can be very scary.

As we continue our time in Spain, our knowledge of the culture and food will continue to grow. Today, June 12th, we will visit an Olive Oil Museum. Pictures and details to come in the next post!
