Bus Rides, Rhino Sanctuaries, and Birthday Parties
Dumelang, friends and family!
Boy have I got some stories for you. We left our beloved Mokolodi Nature Reserve yesterday and headed for the Khama Rhino Sanctuary near Serowe. It was a long drive ahead so we packed plenty of snacks and the boys made a phenomenal playlist to get us through the drive. Once we made it to Khama Rhino, we got settled and headed out for a game drive right away. Our guide prepped us with the typical rules and regs, he also said we might not see any rhinos during this game drive because it was getting so cold out and they would probably go into the bush. However, I would like to make it clear I had faith we would see a rhino the whole time.....and you better believe we saw 14 white rhinos and one black rhino too! Check out the amazing photos everyone took (see I didn't lie when I said we'd get cool pics).
The next morning didn't disappoint either. After a lesson on Khama Rhino Sanctuary and information on some of the animals in the park, we headed out on a morning game drive. We bundled up against the cold but had our cameras and enthusiasm in tow. It paid off, we saw tons of impala, some blue wildebeest, three giraffes (one being a baby), and two more white rhinos! We also went into the "birdhide." A shelter made of reeds right in front of a waterhole, so the animals can't tell we are there if we are real quiet. After a couple of minutes of waiting, a whole herd of zebra came to drink! Later in the day, our group went to visit the SOS Children's Orphanage. We brought our animal posters, snacks, and toothbrushes/personal hygiene products for the kids. We played outside with them for a couple of hours. A few of the little kids even fell asleep in our Global Navigators' arms they were so tuckered out.
We came back for dinner at the Sanctuary and a special surprise was waiting for one of our Navigators! Today was Cameron's birthday and some of our other Navigators got him some balloons and a cake to celebrate his special day! Certainly a birthday to remember! Up next, we are heading to Maun and then the Delta. First, another long bus ride, however we know it'll be worth it in the end! Till next time!
