 This past Saturday, students ended week one with an excursion to the beach. After the group met at a local mall we made our way one hour north to the beach zone of Chicxulub. We passed by a nature reserve known for being where the meteorite that provoked the extinction of the dinosaurs. Upon arriving students were greeted by an iguana, who captivated the attention of the students. Students spent the first part of the day lounging on the beach and playing games in the shallow waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Many students also chose to spend time by the pool, relaxing with friends, and enjoying the buffet. In addition to traditional foods, students also enjoyed familiar foods like chicken tenders and friends. Additionally, lots chose to try two traditional drinks; tamarindo and horchata. Tamarindo is a plant-based drink made from the tamarind plant. Horchata is made rice-based drink flavored with cinnamon. In addition to much relaxation, students took advantage of the beautiful backdrops to take photos for social media, play volleyball, and read by the water. Students were able to view flamingos on our way back to Merida. Students were spent the rest of the day with their host families, and lots spent time enjoying the air conditioning of the mall. Sunday was a rest day with their host families.
