High School Gap Year

Imagine it’s your senior year of high school, and you’re faced with a big decision about your future. Maybe you're not ready to commit to a university for the next four years and wish you could take some time to figure out who you are and what you're truly passionate about. For many, taking a Gap Year is an important step in personal growth and helps prepare them for the real world. A Gap Year Abroad takes that experience even further, allowing you to explore the world, immerse yourself in a new culture, and build meaningful connections—while still giving you the time to find yourself.

Lindsey Andel, an ambassador currently spending her Gap Year Abroad in Spain, was uncertain about her future, just like many others. But her time in Spain has been nothing short of amazing! Keep reading to hear more about her story.

“CIEE solved my crisis of what to do after school in many ways. I found myself feeling lost and alone on what to do after school, however, in this program I’ve been given an opportunity to meet so many incredible people that are feeling the exact way as me. My favorite thing to see on this trip was not only my friends discover what they’re hobbies/career could look like but also seeing in myself how I’ve been able to develop as an adult before college. After this experience I have a lot of confidence in what I want to major in, what hobbies I enjoy, as well as the kind of people I like to be surrounded by. I now found myself endlessly inspired by the “what ifs” because eventually I will figure it out, it’s all a part of growing up.”

Lindsey's experience highlights how a Gap Year Abroad offers the time and space to explore new passions, meet like-minded individuals, and gain a deeper understanding of oneself. For many students, this year away is not just about travel, but about personal discovery. Immersing yourself in a new culture, while also navigating the challenges of living in a foreign country, fosters independence, resilience, and self-confidence. Lindsey's journey shows that taking a break from the traditional academic path can help you develop a clearer sense of direction for your future, all while enjoying a transformative life experience.
