CIEE Security Alert - South Korea

In the late hours of December 3, 2024 Martial Law was announced by South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol.

Protestors have been reported outside the National Assembly building in Seoul following the announcement. Initial reports indicate police officers have blocked off the building and are prohibiting the entrance of any non-political figure.

Authorities will likely maintain increased security around the building to prevent any demonstrators from entering the premises. Clashes between police officers and protestors cannot be ruled out. Localized transport disruptions are likely.

CIEE South Korea has suspended all classes for tomorrow and is requiring all participants to remain home and follow all local safety guidelines.  CIEE South Korea staff are maintaining constant communication with all CIEE participants.

As this is a developing situation, we will continue to monitor the situation closely and remain in contact with our participants to ensure their ongoing safety.
