About Hyderabad

Hyderabad is the fifth largest cosmopolitan city in India and is at the heart of India’s rapidly developing global economy. The city is an urban mix of construction, shopping and food bazaars, department stores, traffic, hi-tech businesses, and city sprawl. Good public transportation makes Hyderabad an excellent base from which to visit other areas of the country. While the language of the state is Telugu, Urdu is widely spoken in Hyderabad and people are comfortable with Hindi. English is also spoken by large numbers of college-educated people.

Where You'll Study

University of Hyderabad

Founded more than 30 years ago, the University of Hyderabad was the first federally funded university in the southern part of India. The University has over 275 faculty, 2,700 full-time students, and eight schools: chemistry; life sciences; mathematics and computer and information sciences; physics; humanities; social sciences; management studies; and performing arts, fine arts, and communication. The campus is located approximately 30 to 45 minutes from the downtown area by public transportation, affording students a more tranquil environment outside of the city center to learn about student life in Andhra Pradesh.

Thoughts From Abroad

As a participant of the CIEE Study Center at the University of Hyderabad, you will experience firsthand the many dichotomies that India, and in particular the city of Hyderabad, exemplifies: an ancient city with all the trappings of modernity; a rapidly evolving global metropolis with the quaintness of a small town; acute poverty and affluence existing side by side; and much more. Through direct enrollment in the University of Hyderabad, as well as many cultural and educational field trips, the Arts and Sciences program is committed to helping you make sense of these contrasts as you adapt to a new setting and way of life.

Life in Hyderabad will be what you make of it. Be sure to make the most of every available opportunity, be it related to a course, learning a language, or meeting new people. How much you are ready to immerse yourself in a radically different experience of the mind, body, and soul, will answer the question, “What will your story be?
