About Lima

Lima’s colonial legacy is reflected in the location of its main square on the banks of the city’s major river, in its numerous ornately constructed baroque churches, and in its historical homes with elaborately carved wooden balconies. A city of eight million, with neighborhoods sprawling out from the colonial center, Lima is peppered with archaeological sites. One need only to listen to Peruvian music, eat Peruvian food, and learn about its fascinating history and culture to observe the blending of indigenous, African, Spanish, European, and Asian cultures.

Where You'll Study

Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú

Founded in 1917, the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP) is the oldest established private higher educational institution in Peru. Its impressive 90-acre campus, which is located in the busy commercial district of San Miguel, houses faculty buildings, a central library, computer facilities, the sports center, student cafeterias, and even an archaeological site. The University also has many research centers, including the Institute for Democracy and Humans Rights. Nearly 17,000 students study here.

Thoughts From Abroad

Founded by 16th Century Spanish conquistadores, Lima is a key location through which the Spanish empire controlled all of its colonies south of Northern and Central America. Limeños take pride in their past, as well as in the ever-changing and dynamic city of Lima today. For most people who visit the fascinating and diverse country of Peru, Lima is often overlooked and considered separate from the rest of the country. However, your semester studying in and exploring both Lima and Peru will leave with you a much deeper understanding and appreciation of the important influence the country has had on Lima and vice versa. Uncovering those dynamic and important links is a challenging and fascinating experience.
