What is CIEE High School Summer Abroad?

Ah, have you heard the news? We've been given nearly 2,000 scholarships for CIEE's High School Summer Abroad 2024 programs! That's right, nearly $2 million reserved for our host families, their friends, and our local schools!

  • 35+ amazing destinations: Paris, Barcelona, Rome, Tokyo, Rabat, and more... Students can find their perfect place to improve their language fluency, adapt to a ne culture, and get real-world experience in a topic of their choice!
  • High school students can meet other students from across the U.S. and make friend with local teens as they gain confidence, independence, responsibility, and a more global perspective.

Transforming lives through international exchange programs

Global Exchange Local Coordinator or GELC

Become a GELC today!

Global Exchange Local Coordinators (GELC) are passionate community leader with a focus on increasing cultural exchange experiences for their local community. 

They:

  • Recruit local host families
  • Match exchange students with local host families
  • Create relationships with community organizations to help further the goal of more exchange 
  • Partner with schools so that foreign exchange students can study while on program
  • Leverage relationships to recruit students to participate in the High School Summer Abroad (HSSA) program

Use social media & word of mouth to share with your network.

Let school clubs know you have a scholarship for one of their students.

Partner with local businesses. If you give a scholarship to a local teen, will they match it?

Application Process

Share the website ciee.org/summer24, ask them to tell you when they're ready to apply.

Send them your LC referral link from Beacon, this this a link to the application.

Submit the HSSA Participant Referral form to track this lead.

Refer questions to hsabroad@ciee.org or 866-583-0332.

LC Community Scholarship

Determine how you want to divide your award (increments of $1,000).

Submit the LC Community Scholarship Statement of Intent.

Receive scholarship redemption code (one code per award).

Give redemption code to the scholarship receipient.

Host Family Scholarship

Determine if current host families will be using their scholarship for their child or give it to someone else.

Fill out the Host Family Scholarship form.

Receive scholarship redemption code.

Five the redemption code to the recipient.

Interest
Prospective students learn about the program and express interest.

Student receives referral link to apply from Local Coordinator.

Student applies to a scholarship and program.

Needs-based deadline: January 24

Chat with Enrollment Coordinator (EC)
Student is contacted by their EC.

Accepted
- No scholarship? Student accepted in 14 days.
- Merit scholarship? Student accepted in 14 days, notified on scholarship in October/November
- Merit and Need scholarship? Student notified in February/March
- Once accepted, student has 7 days to pay $1,000 deposit
- All payments are due April 14

Prepare to travel
Student is confirmed for the program and prepares to travel between June and July.
