Newsmakers: Recent Alumni of CIEE Gap Year Abroad in the Portland Press Herald

Nick and Chloe, two recent alumni of CIEE's Gap Year Abroad programs in France and Chile, offered insight on the topic of gap year benefits as discussed in the Portland Press Herald last month. With the current growing interest in gap year programs, student stories are invaluable. Chloe shares about her experience, "This type of travel is new and unfamiliar, but it's beyond interesting. Every little activity I do with my family, no matter how small, is showing an interesting part of their culture - and I am living it." Read the Portland Press Herald article to learn more.

ALUM OF THE MONTH

Alisa Mustafina, CIEE Work & Travel USA 2010, '11, '12 and CIEE Internship USA 2014

Our Alum of the Month for June, Alisa Mustafina, has participated in CIEE Work & Travel USA three times—first at the Hilton Garden Inn in downtown Portland, Maine, then twice working in Customer Service at CIEE Headquarters, also in Portland, Maine. In 2014, Alisa returned to CIEE for a yearlong internship in Participant Services through CIEE's Internship USA program. She is an accomplished artist with a real gift for painting landscapes and a love for travel. Alisa's time spent in the United States rekindled her love for art and exposed her to the many scenic lighthouses and oceans that serve as the subjects for her paintings. Furthermore, CIEE Work & Travel USA provided her with an important opportunity to grow and learn.

"I learned a lot of things during my programs. I think what is really important to me is what I learned about myself. I just got into the atmosphere where I discovered new sides of my personality. That was really interesting and surprising. Being far away from home and family, being in a foreign country where everything is unusual, and living with people of absolutely different cultures – all of these just make you grow up and mature. That was a priceless life experience."

Read Alisa's story on the blog.

ALUMNI VOICES

Excerpts of Conversations with CIEE Work & Travel USA Alumni:

"I spent an amazing 12 months in San Jose, CA through the work and travel program in 2012. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to work in a range of fields, including graphic design, hospitality, and retail, which not only built on my skills and experience but allowed me to meet so many people and make lifelong friends along the way!" -Jessica Barsenbach (CIEE Work & Travel USA, 2013)

"I can say that it was fascinating being [in Kennebunk, ME], working for a job which you would probably not do in your own country, having friends from different countries and cultures...it was something that every single person in the planet needs to live once." -Ezgi Elçi (CIEE Work & Travel USA, 2014)
