Apply Online!

In an effort to simplify the enrollment process, CIEE has developed an online application and pre-departure preparation procedure. Your Teach Abroad application must be submitted electronically, with supplemental materials submitted via mail.

This easy process will allow you to track and follow the status of your application, and receive your pre-departure program information on an interactive online checklist.

Here’s all you have to do:

First, make sure you meet the eligibility requirements of the teach abroad program to which you are applying. You should also read the terms+conditions of participation.

    1. Create a My CIEE account. This will be the primary method of communication between you and CIEE.

    2. From your My CIEE account, begin the online portion of your application by choosing the program and term you wish to teach abroad. Complete the:
        • Personal Data
        • Placement Request
        • Educational Information
        • $50 non-refundable application fee, payable by Visa or MasterCard

    3. Enter your Personal Statement online. Your statement should address:
        • Your motivations for wanting to participate in this program
        • The personal goals are you hoping to achieve as a CIEE teach abroad participant
        • Why you believe you are a good candidate to offer English education in your chosen country
        • Your idea of a good English lesson
        • The techniques you may use to overcome classroom challenges such as reaching out to students who may not be overly interested in learning English
        • Your perceptions of your destination country: people, culture, school system, etc.
        • How you will adjust to the cultural and life-style challenges of living in your destination country, especially if it is developing
        • Previous international or intercultural experiences you have had living, teaching, or working abroad (not including family holidays or package tours)
        • Details about any teaching, tutoring, training, or similar experiences
        • Involvement in volunteer or community service activities, awards, scholarships, and other achievements
        • Your plans after completion of your teaching abroad commitment

    4. Collect all of the supporting application materials that your program requires and mail to CIEE. Make sure to update your checkbox so CIEE is aware that your items are en route.
      • Two official passport photographs with your name written on the back of each
      • Passport - Photocopy of the details page of your passport that includes your name, birth date, photograph, etc. Your passport must be valid for at least 6-12 months beyond the program end date, depending on destination.
      • Degree confirmation:
        • Chile: Proof of your bachelor’s or master’s degree in the form of an official transcript or a photocopy of your diploma
        • China: A photocopy of your diploma, or a letter from a university lecturer confirming when you are expected to graduate. If a photocopy of your diploma is not available at time of application, keep in mind that those accepted to the Teach in China program will be required to submit a photocopy of their diploma several months prior to the program start date for visa application purposes. Please inquire with the CIEE teach abroad staff for specific date requirements.
        • Spain: Confirmation of your degree or a letter confirming that you would have been in your final year of university during the 2008-9 academic school year. An official transcript will be required pre-departure (confirming your degree, if earned between 1993-2008 OR confirming that you have completed 3 years of undergraduate study).
        • Thailand: Proof of your degree in the form of an official transcript or a photocopy of your diploma. Applicants accepted to Teach in Thailand will need to bring their actual diploma, official transcript, and a confirmation letter from the university Registrar with them to Thailand for visa purposes.
      • Your resume – Limit to one page in length. Please focus your resume on teaching, volunteering, international, educational, and other related experiences.
      • Two letters of recommendation
        • Letters must be dated, signed, and printed on official letterhead or accompanied by a business card.
        • Referees should be persons that are/were directly responsible for the review of your academic and/or professional performance. Referees may include a current or previous professor, academic advisor, supervisor, or manager.
        • CIEE does not accept letters of recommendation from family members, friends, neighbors, or similar sources.
        • Originals of all recommendation letters are required. Faxes or emails may be considered to expedite applications, however they must be followed up by mailed originals.
        • CIEE does not have an evaluation form for referees to complete.
      • Teach in Chile & Teach in Spain applicants: Documentation of upper intermediate/ advanced Spanish language skills with one of the following:
        • At least four [4] semesters of university Spanish language courses listed on your university transcript
        • An official letter written by your most recent university Spanish professor that confirms your ability to use the language at the upper intermediate to advanced level
        • A bilingual background
        • Other forms of equivalency may be considered, inquire with the CIEE teach abroad staff

    Note: Once you have begun a CIEE application, you can save and return to it by logging into My CIEE and clicking on My Home.

5. Monitor your application and pre-departure materials via your My CIEE account. Once your complete teach abroad application has been received by CIEE, we will contact you to begin the placement process.

 

Deadlines
Your complete application and supplemental materials must be received by CIEE by the deadline dictated by your program and departure date. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so apply as early as possible. Late applications will be considered when possible, contact CIEE with questions.

Chile

  • February 2008 departure: Applications are now closed

China

  • February 2008 departure: Applications are now closed
  • August 2008 departure: May 15, 2008

Spain

  • September 2008 departure: May 15, 2008

Thailand

  • May 2008 departure: Applications are now closed
  • October 2008 departure: June 15, 2008
