Studying abroad isn’t just for language majors. You can gain that same international perspective—and even the research skills you need for graduate work—studying science abroad. CIEE offers programs during the semester and summer in 13 countries that make the world your laboratory with classes in biology, chemistry, conservation, ecology, environmental studies, health sciences, and physics.

Whether you’re a science major or just need to fulfill an elective, you have a variety of options as wide as the world. Explore South Africa, blessed with the big five fauna (lions, leopards, buffaloes, elephants, and rhinos) and 22,000 species of flora while learning about environmental studies. Take physics with British students in London. See the biology you study in Perth come to life in the nearby woodlands and wetlands of Western Australia. CIEE also offers several science-focused programs that combine coursework with hands-on field experience and the chance to conduct your own independent projects. And you don’t necessarily need to speak another language, because almost all our programs teach science in English. After class, immerse yourself in the culture by visiting museums, volunteering, hiking, joining university clubs, or soaking up the environment in countless other ways.

You’ll come to understand how people think about science half a world away.

learn science, and more than science
Is there a part of the world you’ve always wanted to know better? A country you’ve studied that you’d like to see for yourself? A city you’ve dreamed about since childhood? Do you want to learn chemistry in Turkey or biotechnology in Korea? You decide. Here is where you can go to continue your science studies:

Africa/Middle East
Legon, Ghana
Cape Town, South Africa [arts & sciences]
Stellenbosch, South Africa
Ankara, Turkey

Asia
Hyderabad, India
Seoul, Korea

Australia
Perth
Sydney [internship and integrated studies]
Sydney [arts and sciences]
Wollongong

Europe
London, England [university college london]
London, England [university of westminster]
Dublin, Ireland

field study
If you’re a science major—or have taken at least two semesters of biology or ecology—you can combine classwork with field work in Costa Rica or Bonaire. In Bonaire, you’ll learn coral reef ecology, coastal zone management, and sustainable development in the classroom. Then, you’ll scuba dive with local experts to do your own independent research. Or live in a biological station in Monteverde, and spend half your time off-site gaining research experience by studying the ecosystems of the surrounding cloud forest. Classes center on tropical diversity and conservation. In these programs, science is the focus, not language, but you will study Spanish with an ecology focus (in Costa Rica) and take a quick crash course in Papiamento (in Bonaire) to help you communicate. Both programs are offered during the fall and spring semesters and in the summer.

Explore the effects of environmental and development projects on communities and ecosystems on our program in Khon Kaen, Thailand. Conduct research on health issues such as HIV/AIDS and community health, and environmental concerns such as pollution, consumerism and garbage, mining, integrated and natural farming, national resource management, deforestation, and community forestry.

Bonaire [tropical marine ecology and conservation]
Monteverde, Costa Rica [tropical ecology and conservation]
Khon Kaen, Thailand [development and globalization]

in Spanish
If you’re interested in putting your advanced Spanish language skills to the test—you’ll need to have taken the equivalent of six college-level semesters—by taking science courses in Spanish alongside local students, you can study in Spain or Chile.

Valparaíso, Chile
Seville, Spain [advanced liberal arts]
