Are you interested in international business? Have you been waiting impatiently to see how what you learn in class relates to businesses, governmental agencies, or non-governmental organizations abroad? Real-world international experience can transform you as a student, a job applicant, and a person. CIEE offers programs with for-credit internship opportunities during the semester and over the summer in 11 countries worldwide.

Teaching English in Madrid or working at the headquarters of a major hotel chain in Palma de Mallorca? Employment at The Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children or Guinness in Dublin? Community service in Argentina or the Dominican Republic? Depending on where you want to study—and on your skills and course experience—the internships available to you will vary. Like the rest of the courses you’ll take abroad, all internships have an academic component, giving you class time to discuss, reflect on, and learn from your experience. See our Business Abroad webpage to learn more about taking classes in economics, management, marketing, and finance. After work and class, soak in the local culture by exploring the sights, attending a football match, speaking with your language partner, or joining university clubs. Think about what you’re interested in, and CIEE will try to match you with an organization that will give you the experience you’re looking for (then, you’ll need to interview or write a proposal). No matter what interests you, you’ll gain a level of cross-cultural awareness that you never could as a visitor.

work and learn
Work at a local or international company while studying business, management, economics, or anything that interests you, and you’ll really start to understand business abroad. For these internships, English is sufficient (though in Brussels, knowledge of French or Dutch will increase your options):

Africa
Legon, Ghana

Australia
Perth
Sydney [internship and integrated studies]

Europe
Brussels, Belgium
London, England [university of westminster]
Budapest, Hungary
Dublin, Ireland

in Spanish
If you have intermediate or advanced Spanish language skills (if you’ve taken at least four semesters of Spanish) you can undertake an internship or community service project while studying in Spain or Latin America. Internships in Spain generally have a business focus, and you’ll work in corporations in a wide variety of industries including media, tourism, and the arts. Internships in Latin America have a community service or development focus, and you’ll be placed in organizations involved in social policy, education, human rights, or health issues. Here are your choices:

Spain
Madrid
Palma de Mallorca
Seville [business and society]

Latin America
Buenos Aires, Argentina
Santiago, Dominican Republic [liberal arts]
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

in Chinese
If you have advanced Chinese language skills and plan to study abroad for a full year, during your second semester you can choose an internship in Taipei, Taiwan. Internships involve organizations dedicated to issues such as social welfare, social policy, women’s rights, environmental protection, and fine arts.

Taipei, Taiwan

in French
If you have taken the equivalent of two semesters of college-level French, you can participate in an internship in Dakar, Senegal. Teach English at a street school, help patients in a public clinic, or work with a local organization on human rights, environmental protection, or community arts issues.

Dakar, Senegal

over the summer
If you can’t devote a full semester to studying and interning abroad, go over the summer. You can participate in an internship in Brussels or—if you’ve taken at least five semesters of Spanish—in Seville.

Brussels, Belgium
Seville, Spain

other experiences
Many of our 95 programs offer hands-on experences that extend beyond traditional internships and include service-learning, field study, interactive core courses, language practica, and independent study. Find out what options are available in the places you’re interested in.
