Are programs available in my major?
Studying abroad is definitely not just for language or
international studies majors. CIEE offers a wide variety of programs
across a broad range of disciplines, from Accounting to Visual
Arts. So chances are very good that you’ll find a study
abroad program that interests you and fits your curriculum. Not
all courses are available in all locations, however. Use our Program
Finder to find the best match for you.
Can I study overseas if I don’t speak a foreign
language?
Absolutely. Many of the programs available through CIEE
are taught in English. Use our Program Finder to search for
programs according to the language of instruction. What’s
more, if you choose an English-speaking program in a non-English
speaking country, you can still enhance your foreign language
proficiency. By living among those speaking in their native
tongue, you’ll pick up a lot more than hearing your classmates
back home mangle the grammar and mispronounce all the words.
Will I get credit for courses I take abroad?
Many CIEE programs take place at fully accredited and internationally
recognized universities. But, as you might expect, your school
ultimately has the last word when it comes to the course credit
that it will accept. To avoid any unpleasant surprises at the
end of your overseas program, simply bring the course description
and number of credits that CIEE recommends (available from
the Program Information drop down menu) to your academic advisor
for review before enrolling.
Will studying abroad delay my graduation?
Not unless you’re careless. Plan ahead and schedule courses—either
in your major, your minor, or as electives—that are acceptable
by your academic advisor as valid pre-requisites for graduation.
Can I study abroad if I’m a freshman?
No. CIEE programs are for those at sophomore-, junior-,
or senior-year status. But freshmen should start planning now
by getting required courses out of the way. This will allow
greater freedom when choosing a program for next year.
Will studying abroad help my chances of finding a job?
Nothing jumps off a résumé quite like time spent
overseas. As the economy of the United States becomes increasingly
enmeshed with the economies of other nations, employers are becoming
desperate for employees with international perspectives. So as
you’re benefiting from cultural immersion at a prestigious
foreign university, you’re automatically increasing your
employment desirability far beyond that of your peers back home.
I’m afraid my GPA might not be good enough, can
I still study abroad?
Many CIEE programs require a 2.75 minimum GPA. View the
eligibility requirements for all programs in a region by selecting
a region then selecting the link, Programs at a Glance.
