At the heart of communicating well is the ability to understand your audience. Studying abroad—and living with people whose ideas are shaped by a different day-to-day experience than yours—builds that ability like nothing else can. You can study abroad while fulfilling your major, minor, or elective requirements with classes in communication theory and strategy, the media, marketing communications, and journalism. CIEE offers semester and summer programs in 19 countries that help you learn to communicate in new ways—internationally, interculturally, in every way.

If you’re a student of communications who also wants to be a student of the world, you have lots of options. Contemplate how public opinion begins and builds in Amsterdam. Debate media ethics in Sydney. Put your photojournalism into practice on a vlog you post from Peru. Make your mark in marketing communications (like advertising, public relations, or graphic design) in Madrid. Build your broadcast journalism skill set in Brussels. Debate the role of the international press in Hyderabad. On many programs, you’ll take courses in English through the communications, social sciences, or journalism departments of the overseas university you attend; on others, CIEE courses on communicationsrelated topics are offered. On every program, you’ll build cultural understanding both inside and outside the classroom. If you have advanced language skills, hone them further with communications courses taught in the local language; language classes that will help you to communicate better with locals are available at every level.

Combine that coursework with an open mind and a desire to immerse yourself in another culture and you’ll come away with valuable experiences—for yourself, your future employers, and the world around you.
