Drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, music, dance, theater, cinema, architecture, design. Whether you’re a creator or strictly an appreciator, nothing will inspire you more than studying abroad. Experiencing new things, meeting new people, and participating in new cultures gives you the living material you need to transform your own work—or to put the subjects you’re studying into context. In 18 countries worldwide, CIEE offers programs that cover the history, theory, and practice of the arts.
Whether you’re fulfilling your major, elective requirements, or a higher calling, there are arts classes—or entire programs—for you. Some give you the chance to study the arts of your host country (its art, architecture, music, dance, theater, or film); others let you take theory or studio courses. Some programs teach courses specifically for CIEE or international students, while on other programs, you’ll enroll in classes at the university and study right alongside local students.
Let Australia’s indigenous music and dance inspire your sculpture or photography on a studio arts program in Sydney. Take theater classes with British students in Shakespeare’s London. See the real-life inspirations for the films you study in class on the streets of Prague. Take your guitar to Brazil and learn from the Afro-Brazilian musicians of Salvador da Bahia. Dance to the rhythms of Ghana, fire ceramics in the Chilean style, put anime into context by studying the history of art in Japan. After class, attend a concert, opera, theater performance, gallery opening, or university film screening and see the fruits of today’s local artists.
Ask the sort of questions, think the sort of thoughts, do the sort of arts project you never could have done at home. See first-hand what local artists have done throughout the ages, find a way to put your own interpretation on their tradition, and make a tangible record of your study abroad experience. Write your own story in paint, pencil, photography, graphics, dance, monologue, metals, pixels, words—whatever language suits you.
immerse yourself in the arts
If you’re serious about studio arts, design, or architecture, get your fix on one of two intensive CIEE programs. In Sydney, put your stamp on the fine art field of your choice—painting, photography, object design, or sculpture—by taking theory and studio classes at Sydney College of the Arts. Architecture majors or minors with at least one semester of design studio behind them and design-related majors who have completed at least four semesters of Spanish study can continue their studies on an interdisciplinary program involving theoretical and historical courses in Barcelona—a city fast becoming a showcase for both architecture and design.

study in the studio
Enroll alongside local students in a theory or studio class. On programs worldwide, courses are offered in drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, metalwork, photography, textile design, print-making, animation, graphic design, object design, pottery, ceramics, and industrial design. Most classes are taught in English, but on some programs you can choose courses in the local language if you have advanced language skills.

Learn about the language and the history of art—whether you’re an art history major or not—with a wide variety of courses offered on these programs. Understand the aesthetics, criticism, and implications of fine arts, architecture, urban planning, theater, cinema, music, and dance abroad—where you have the chance to see some of the works and the performances you’re learning about for yourself.
If you’re interested in understanding more about the art history, cinema, or theater that shapes—and was shaped by—your new host country and culture in particular, you can do that on almost any CIEE program. Consult the course listings of the program you’re considering to find out what’s available.
