Jim Gerstein is a founding partner of Gerstein | Agne, and offers clients experience in managing non-profit organizations, strategic planning, and communications for projects ranging from U.S. presidential campaigns to international peace efforts to crisis management. Since 2001, Gerstein has served as the Executive Director of Democracy Corps, a non-profit that conducts public opinion research and provides strategic advice to Democrats and progressive organizations. Prior to his work with Democracy Corps, Gerstein was Executive Director of the Center for Middle East Peace and Economic Cooperation. Mr. Gerstein has also worked on several American political campaigns and held different positions in the Democratic Party.

Dr. David Maxwell, President of Drake University, who delivered the plenary address at our 2001 conference in Portland, Oregon, returns to discuss the strategic considerations that led to dramatic changes in second language education at Drake—changes that are challenging traditional assumptions about how second languages should be learned.

Stevan Trooboff and Michael Vande Berg, CIEE, will present the results of a study entitled “Student Decision-Making and Study Abroad: Motivations, Expectations and Goal-Setting.” CIEE carried out this study following the plenary discussion two years ago in Miami when members of the CIEE Academic Consortium identified student decision-making as one of the topics they most wanted us to research.
Following the plenary address, the CIEE Academic Consortium Board and Board of Directors will report on recent activities and take questions from the audience.
