Setting the Stage: Managing Growth in Study Abroad
November 12-15, 2008

We as a field spend a good deal of time considering academic issues: pedagogical approaches, academic rigor, course development, curriculum integration. Equally important—and much less frequently addressed—are the management techniques that are absolutely critical to the effectiveness of our carefully-designed programs. Those concerns are the focus of the 2008 CIEE Conference on International Educational Exchange. As educators, we are all excited and challenged by the steady increase in enrollments over the last decade as well as the potential of the Simon Act to dramatically increase the number of federal scholarships and thus the number of students able to study abroad. We have recognized that we must develop programs and instructional models that can accommodate increasing numbers of students without creating expatriate enclaves overseas, but what about the management tests that will arise? What adjustments can be made to handle that growth programmatically but also administratively? How can we acquire the skills—in disciplines such as business strategy, organizational behavior, marketing, and finance—required to confront the problems that all managers inevitably face? In 2006, we launched the CIEE Management Institute to create professional development resources to complement and augment the education expertise already present in our field.
