Rationale
To say ‘Peru’ is to conjure up many different images relating to its ancient history (Pre-Columbian Civilizations) and its more recent troubled history (Shining Path, Fujimori, Cocaine Industry). Experience Peru's present firsthand and how changes have affected Peruvian's perception of themselves and their country in the first decade of the new millennium. From the national economy to the informal sector, explore how Peru's expanding global economy is expected to impact the future of poverty and equality within its borders. The seminar will take place both in Lima and in Cusco and will include a trip to Machu Picchu.
Host Institution
The seminar is hosted by the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP) in Lima. The Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP), founded in 1917, is the oldest established private higher educational institution in Peru. The impressive 90-acre campus houses faculty buildings, the central library, computer facilities, the sports center, student cafeterias, and even an archaeological dig site. Nearly 17,000 students study at the PUCP. The University has many research centers, including the Institute for Democracy and Humans Rights. The campus is located in the district of San Miguel, a busy area with enormous commercial activity.
