Rationale

This seminar focuses on the political, social, and economic realities of contemporary Argentina and Chile. The differences and similarities between the two nation’s current situations are addressed. Both countries have emerged from authoritarian governance and are grappling with the issues of human rights and democratization. Chile and Argentina have experienced profound economic changes that have had implications in terms of income distribution, growth, and equity. Special consideration will be given to the matter of human rights violations and how it continues to affect social relations in both countries.

Host Institutions

The seminar is hosted by the Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO) in both Argentina and Chile. FLACSO is an international academic institution, founded in 1957 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), with the purpose of promoting research, training, and technical assistance in the social sciences in Latin America. FLACSO sponsors the largest, most important, and most prestigious teaching program in the social sciences in Latin America, particularly in the areas of culture, gender studies, political studies, social policy, international studies, and military affairs.
